The Examined Life

About

Our purpose

The Examined Life exists to help you meet whatever you're feeling with wisdom that has lasted. Tell us how you feel — or how you want to feel — and we return a genuine, contextual quote from the philosophical canon. Not a platitude, and not advice: a voice from someone who faced the same thing, and thought about it deeply.

Why we made this

Sometimes I want to know what others with these same emotions felt — and it helps to know what authors, poets, artists, philosophers, and other known figures thought in those moments. We built The Examined Life to let you do exactly that. We hope it genuinely inspires you to know you have never been alone in this human experience.

What guides us

Every quote and every feature is held to a single standard: it must encourage conscious, moral, reflective living. We offer wisdom that serves human flourishing. No hate, no cruelty, no dehumanization — in any form. If something doesn't serve the examined life, it doesn't belong here.

The library

Our collection spans 604 quotes from more than 200 voices across 44 traditions — Stoic, Existentialist, Buddhist, Humanist, and dozens more.
