The Examined Life

Privacy

In plain language, here's what we do and don't know about you.

The Examined Life is for reflection, not treatment — it isn't medical or mental-health advice.

Your journal and saved quotes stay on your device

Your reflection journal and your saved quotes are stored locally on your own device (in your browser's local storage). They are never transmitted to us and never stored on our servers. We can't see them, and we can't recover them.

That also means they live only where you put them: if you clear your browser data or switch to a different device, those entries are gone. We don't keep a backup of them anywhere.

No tracking

We don't use third-party analytics, advertising pixels, or behavioral tracking of any kind. There is nothing here that watches how you use the app.

What we do store, if you make an account

Everything below only applies if you create an account or subscribe. If you just use the free app without an account, we store nothing about you.

  • Your email address — used only to sign you in.
  • A bcrypt-hashed password — we never store your password in plaintext.
  • If you subscribe, Stripe subscription metadata — your Stripe customer and subscription IDs, your plan, and your renewal date.

Payments

Payments are processed by Stripe. Your card number is handled by Stripe directly — we never see it, and we never store it.

Who we share data with

The only third party we share anything with is Stripe, and only for billing. We don't sell data, and we don't share it with anyone else.
